Beck kept things simple at the launch of his 2008 North American tour at the Grand Sierra Theatre in Reno, Nevada, on Thursday night. No marionettes, no Flaming Lips, no flaming guitars or leaf-blowers, but just the full range and restlessness of his music and a minimum of special effects, with a packed set-list stretching from the early ’90s and up to his new album, Modern Guilt.

Beck arrived onstage with blond hair down to his shoulders and slid right into the tense groove of “Devil’s Haircut” as he and his four-piece band unleashed a quick succession of recent tunes: the funky, rumbling “Nausea” and a frantic “Timebomb.” Things slowed down long enough for Beck to play several moments of raw, gutbucket slide guitar, leading into the opening of “Loser,” the twangy post-modern blues rant that launched his career back in 1994.

Among the newest songs was “Gamma Ray,” with its go-go beat and Beck’s jittery lyrics on melting icecaps and “smokestack lightning out my window.” Other tunes from the Danger Mouse-produced Modern Guilt were fun, scattered and reflective on his place in an uncertain world. “Chemtrails” was bathed under layers of psychedelic static and melody as Beck sang quietly: “So many people, where do they go?”

He dedicated 2005’s “Qué Onda Guero” to any “gueros, gueras and guerolitas” in the house. For “Hell Yes,” Beck gathered his band up front with handheld electronic devices, but when one of the cables wasn’t long enough to reach, he joked: “We have the technology. Someone go down to Sav-On for the right extension cord.”

Visual effects were provided by a quartet of big movie lights and a video screen that flashed a series of abstract shapes, silhouettes and video footage: an ocean liner, barren trees, landscapes, bridges, the band in action, etc. Late in his 90-minute show, Beck was joined by support act Devandra Banhart, whose own opening set offered another diverse range of sounds, from big rock to cosmic folk and songs warm and tropical. Together, Beck and Banhart performed a playful reading of Bob Dylan’s “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat.”

Odelay getting re-issued!

Beck's 1996 classic "Odelay" will be expanded for a Jan. 29 reissue by Geffen/UMe. The new edition of the album, which in original form has sold 2.2 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, includes a second disc with a host of rare extras.

Disc one sports the original "Odelay" plus the previously unreleased outtakes "Gold Chains" and "Inferno," produced by the Dust Brothers. Also featured is "Deadweight," from the "A Life Less Ordinary" soundtrack.

The second disc rounds up 16 import-only B-sides and remixes, including "Burro" ("Jackass" sung in Spanish with a mariachi band), a cover of Skip James' "Devil Got My Woman" recorded at Memphis' Sun Studios and UNKLE's remix of "Where It's At."

Beck has kept a relatively low profile in 2007, most recently surfacing to collaborate with the White Stripes on new music for a series of 7-inch singles, released yesterday (Dec. 18).

Beck must love El Paso

No joke. I've seen him here twice on surprise appearances. Both times at the underground art shows out here. The second time I saw him, he just showed up to the art show and played for free! It was amazing. I'm not sure if he knows someone out here, or if he just really likes it here, but he comes around a bit. It's weird for us because no one famous (underground or mainstream) ever just drops by El Paso, Texas to chill. He makes our little city feel special.

As a joyous, but fairly easy going 6 month run of touring with Beck in support of "The Information" comes to a close this week, I find myself happily buried in other projects that will doubtlessly fill my time until there's more touring to do.

In terms of those Beck gigs, we did a taped appearance this past Thursday for the Jimmy Kimmell show which will air this coming Thursday the 14th. I daresay it came off pretty damn well! That show is particularly fun, because after you tape the requisite two songs for the camera, you do a mini-set for the assembled fans that have come to see you play. Last night, we played a rough and ready surprise gig at The Echo, and tonight (being Sunday the 10th), we will be performing at the KROQ Acoustic Christmas festival here in LA.

Now, I'm already pretty deep into recording bass for the score to the upcoming Ocean's 13 film, with David Holmes at the helm as composer. Some ridiculous musicians involved in this, and we're working at my favorite place in the world, Oceanway Studios in Hollywood, where lots of Beck stuff has been tracked over the years.

Just finished recording some stuff for a new album from the highly regarded and successful Swedish artist "Moneybrother", which had me reunited with my Beck "Midnite Vultures" bandmates Roger Manning, Lyle Workman and Victor Indrizzo. It was altogether TOO joyous and exciting. Those guys are a dream to play with.

Otherwise, working with some other artists in the producer role. The main one is a project that I am so deeply proud of, the upcoming solo album of Ken Andrews (formerly of Failure and Year of the Rabbit). Ken and I have been close friends for about fifteen years, and I am thrilled to be working with him in this capacity. I was able to hire Beck band members Brian Lebarton, Matt Sherrod, Justin Stanley and Matt Mahaffey to play on this set of recordings, and I think the results are stellar The album is in the mixing phase as I write this. I'll have more to tell you about this as it nears its actual release.

There's a couple of other possible album production projects coming up that I'm excited about, but nothing I can really talk about yet.

I think '07 is already shaping up to be quite an adventure!

Nissan Live Sets

I went to a taping in LA last night for Nissan Live Sets. Not sure when it will air online. It was a weird non-concert-ish concert expericence, with not too many people dancing. I had a great time, though! My friend Liz and I boogied down like nobody was watching. :) I hadn't seen the puppet bit yet. They were cool. He has the whole band as marionettes w/ people maneuvering them the whole show.

---- Q&A with Beck ---- (preselected questions from audience members -- One girl asked him if he were to enter a rap off, who would he go up against and why. Beck answered, "I wouldn't." Then she said, "What about against me?" and he was like, "Oh yeah, against you? Sure!" and said something like "My name is Beck and I like to rap." but then they made the girl get off the podium and wouldn't let her rap back. I guess she went off the script and they weren't happy about the improv, although that was the most entertaining part of the Q&A!). Someone else asked about the puppets too -- did they have personalities, or something like that. Beck said they were cute. And destructive - they tore apart Radiohead's dressing room, haha. And they're cute.

Did anyone catch the show at the Wiltern on Tuesday?

I think of the handful of Beck shows I've seen, it was the best. The energy was great and the venue was perfect. I laughed, I clapped, I danced danced danced.

The Puppetron is so simple, it's brilliant. I wonder if the little shorts they're shooting for each city will ever be available. I wanna see the LA one again...

saw Beck at the Georgia Theatre

songs that i remember him playing.

he played a couple kickass medleys where he would start off with a song from odelay then go to black tambourine then some other song. he played another one where he played one foot in the grave then the flaming lips' Do You Realize, then some other song.

he played Paper Tiger, Golden Age, a lot of stuff off guero. a couple new songs, encored with Where It's At and E-Pro, both kicked ass.

he played Nicotine and Gravy, i think, Cold Brains, Devil's Haircut, Whiskeyclone Hotel City 1997. he also played High 5 (Rock the catskills)

that's about all i can remember. he had this guy that would play a big tin can sometimes, but most of the time he was just dancing and punching the air. he kicked ass. he also had a puppet stage that looked like something right out of Team America. Each puppet looked like a band member and were being controlled by puppeteers right there. someone was filming them and that was put up on this huge screen behind the stage. great stuff.

right before the encore, they showed this video of the puppets hanging out all over athens and talking about how they got wasted and hooked up the night before. they went to all the local jaunts. then the puppets came out before the band and played Loser. then the band came out and did Where It's At and E-Pro. then i peed in my pants a little.

I was really pissed off at the sound guys for the Beck show I saw in Santa Cruz a few weeks back. All I could hear was the INCREDIBLY LOUD feedback from the base player. When someone had a solo (I think the harmonica player?) the sound guy was SMOKING A CIGARETTE and not even looking at the band. Stupid ass. I could barely hear Beck sing and I sure couldn't hear any of the other musicians. Did anybody else experience this?

chain reaction

Hey all

I don't know how it happens, but I heard Chain Reaction the other day and now really love the song. Before I thought it was obnoxious and boring, but it played on Itunes randomly and something clicked and now I think it's great. That happens to me with Beck in general as well. I'll have an album and only listen to a few songs here and there and then a song that I didn't pay that much attention to will completely blow my mind one day and then the whole album will fall into place. With Midnight Vultures the same happened with Nicotine and Gravy.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Hey everyone!

Just got back from the Beck show, and he was awesome as usual! I saw him at Universal in LA a few months back too and the setlist was pretty similar, but I thought this one was much better! Way more energy, all GA!, and no corporate vibe at good ol' UCSD. "The Islands" from Montreal opened.

I'm not great at setlists, but -- Loser opener, E Pro encore complete with dancers from the audience, and (in no particular order) Black Tambourine, Where It's At, a hard rockin' Rental Car with a little Decemberists sample thrown in the middle, Girl, a super sexy Debra.... can't think of any more off the top of my head. The whole show was a little over 90 minutes.

If you've seen any of the shows on the Guero tour -- I love that thing they do at the dinner table with the glasses and dishes percussion section, and then the "clap hands" part. (I assume they do it every show, since they did at both Universal and tonight).

Can you tell I'm still on an adrenaline high from the show? Next stop, Vegas!!!!! WOOOOHOOO!!!

Guero Tour

Saw Beck with Le Tigre opening on Thursday in Vancouver, not my very favourite show (4th time) as sound was a bit meh at first, and they were a little less together than they might have been, the first half of the show, but still! tons of fun! He played lots of Odelay and Midnite Vultures tunes along with the Guero songs, and we were treated to a really amusing acoustic Debra.

Le Tigre were as fun as ever.

Anyways, I encourage you all to see him if he comes to your neighbourhood.

I've notice many people (including myself) will always comment on BECK's sound and we usually say, "It sounds like [some other band]"

It seems BECK takes elements of all other music and combines them to make his own unique songs.
It's like he's paying homage to the old music.

Somebody told me they thought "Missing" sounded like Sting voice. I hadn't thought of that, but I just love that song. I also enjoy the rap in the middle part. The bass on "Girl" is groovin'

SNL Performance

I'm sure most of you caught Beck's performance on Saturday Night Live. Overall the show was pretty bad. Tom Brady seems like a nice guy, but he's not funny at all. (yes, I'm an Eagles fan).

Quick Reviews:
E-Pro: The verse of the song seems tough to do live. It's an upbeat rock song with a subdued, almost melancholy melody. It's not quite rap, either. Considering that, I thought it was pretty good.

Girl: I thought the live guitars sounded so much better than the slick guitars on the album. My only complaint is that Beck's vocals were way too low and the background singers' were too high. Nice performance though.

The dancing guy was great and it's nice see Beck playing guitar alot for a change.

Did anyone see Beck's baby during the closing credits? I read his name is Cosimo and he was being held by a woman I assume is Beck's wife.

Becks groovy music

Hi there! I'm new here.

I wanted to add, long story short, that Becks groovy music just blew me away.

I'm a musician and this stuff is very inspiring. I like the groovy stuff off 'Midnight Vultures' & most of 'Odelay'. I shy away from the other slow acoustic songs, or the like. I prefer songs that jump out like 'Beercan', etc.

I was having the best party, by myself, one wonderful night. I put on 'MV' for the first time....WOW. I replayed the CD immediately.

Like the old saying goes - He's "got it"
Bands like the Black Crowes IMO have always tried to be this groovy. I can't wait to whip this out on my older brother.
I'm not focused on the weird lyrics, but the beat is sooo good, I'll save it for the future, perhaps.

They played 'Golden Age' off of Sea Change during one particularly sad, nostalgic moment.
